Process
I take mill stock, usually steel, and I cut, shape, weld, and bolt it together, to create my sculpture and installations.
The shapes and patterns in my work derive from my love of the life and land surrounding my home, the properties of the materials I work with every day, and my life’s store of impressions from art, science and engineering. [Perhaps that makes me a generative Natural intelligence?]
Once the initial forms for a project have occurred to me, I plan and design in detail. For this, I sketch by hand, 3D model on my computer [‘old school’ with Rhino 3D and Grasshopper - #NoAI], and experiment in my studio. When I am ready to commit to metal, I use every tool at my disposal, from hand-held saws, files, and hammers, to precision laser cutting services.
For more about my background, a recording of the artist’s talk I gave at the Oblivion Gallery in Eugene earlier this year can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9FVOfjQmcg&t=1818s
Recent Work
In my Other Life series I sought to honor some of the geometries and ancient forms of life which underwrite our existence now and speculated on their manifestation in some remote future.
Current Work
With the project I am developing currently my ultimate goal is to connect back as strongly as I can to the living world of today.
